The Profit of Instruction

One day the dog said to the cock his friend, "Cocky, i want to inform you that i won't be able to visit you tomorrow because i shall be traveling today to visit a distant cousin of mine on the other side of town."

And with a twinkle in his eyes, he added, "I hear there are lots of good stuff there. I might just take some time out to rest from my hectic schedule."

"When are you starting off?" asked the cock, "I'd like to join you. What do you say?"

The dog replied, "Tonight. You are welcome to go along with me. After all, two is company and by the way, what are friends for?"

But after thinking for awhile the dog broke the silence, his face looking grim. "To get to my cousin's we have to pass through the tangling forest. You it is froth with dangers especially in the dark so you will have to trot along with me very closely."

With a cocky air the cock answered, "You don't have to worry friend, I know the forest like the inside of my wing. I search for food for my household there everyday so I can take care of myself. Don't I have wings?"

The night came and when it was time they did set off.

Along the way the dog cautioned his friend again and again. "Stick close by me. You may know this place during the day but the night is different from the day. And i see at night."

But the cock chuckling, waved it off as they raced along.

Not very long afterwards, they got to a large plank that was on the ground and the dog got on it but the cock followed on ordinary ground.

Panting, the dog shouted, "Get on the plank, it may be our way over a ditch ahead!"

Not obliging him, the cock replied that the plank had always been there but with no ditch.

Immediately, the dog seeing a ditch cried out, "Get on the plank! Get on the plank! I see a ditch very close."

The cock ignored the cries and pleas of his friend, the dog; and chuckled. The chuckling sound was barely out of his mouth when he fell head-long into a very deep ditch.

This fable of mine teaches us to not to always assume that the much we know is enough to help us, but to intelligently listen to counsel; for our refusal to listen might be our greatest undoing.

Not every mistake can be repaired. Not every loss can be recovered.

Proverbs Chapter 3:21b-24 says,
"... ...keep sound wisdom and discretion: So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet."

May your day be illuminated with wisdom today, in Christ Jesus Name. Amen.
